4.3.1 The Virtual Lecture Theatre
The lecture held in Nürnberg is filmed with two video cameras, one filming the lecturer (see Figure 4.5), the other filming the overhead projection and the blackboard, which was divided into three sections. Each section has a 4/3 video format, and the lecturers uses one section after the other to optimise filming (see Figure 4.6). The audio signal is recorded from the sound system of the lecture theatre.
While the video and audio signals are recorded with a VHS video recorder for post-processing, they are also being digitised by two Sun Sparc Stations and transmitted to Erlangen via a 34 Mbit/s ATM connection. The software used to transmit and receive is ShowMe-TV-Transmitter and ShowMe-TV-Receiver from Sun Microsystems Inc.
The lecture room in Erlangen was equipped with 3 Sun Sparc Stations (with cameras) to allow students to follow lectures. To interact with students in Erlangen the ShowMe conference tools are used. For students in Nürnberg the content of the Show me electronic whiteboard is projected on the wall of the lecture theatre with a video beamer.
